Le Nouveau Monde..The New World

Le titre donné à cette vaste terre d’Amérique n’est pas sans signification. L’aspiration à des cieux nouveaux et à une terre nouvelle dont parle la Bible (Ap. 21, 1) pousse de l’intérieur depuis toujours l’humanité vers sa finalité heureuse. Un Nouveau Monde? Toute espérance n’est-elle pas permise?
Le Nouveau Monde couvre les deux Amériques, et très tôt, Notre-Dame y signifie ses vues. En 1531, elle donne ses indications à un indien, Juan Diego, le chargeant d’annoncer ses demandes à l’évêque du temps. Message: construire un lieu qui deviendra témoin des bénédictions qu’elle veut répandre en ces larges contrées. Message en filigrane: Notre-Dame de la Guadeloupe sera, depuis ce moment, source d’inspiration pour plusieurs peuples d’Amérique, Espagnols compris, en quête d’un nouveau monde.
Quel est ce nouveau monde? Ni utopie ni chimères, mais accomplissement de la promesse divine. Il a commencé en terre de Palestine; Marie, Joseph, Jésus, agissant de concert et rénovant de ce fait l’humanité entière, y jetèrent les bases de l’Église naissante. Celle-ci s’est propagée, esprit de Pentecôte, jusqu’aux terres de France, Provence accueillante. Là encore agissante, la présence des trois a façonné l’histoire. Depuis, la France ne compte plus les lieux où la «présence» éclate en demandes exaucées, guérisons et victoires, où s’entrecroisent les personnages les plus divers: enfants et prêcheurs, mystiques, bergères, princesses ou rois, Thérèse et Vincent, Bernadette, Louis… tous porteurs du «neuf» de l’Évangile, dans le vieux continent, poussant et tirant l’histoire vers sa plénitude.
L’ancien contient en germe le nouveau, il n’est jamais négligeable. Mais Dieu parle dans le temps et l’espace:
«Quitte ton pays…», dit-il à Abraham, parce que c’est ailleurs que je ferai du neuf.
Certains donc, Français, se sont expatriés sous la poussée mystique, pour fonder, semer et faire croître un arbre magnifique, au feuillage nourrissant:

The title given to this vast land of America is not without significance. The desire for a New Heaven and a New Earth in the Bible (Ap. 21: 1) thrusts humanity from within towards its happy ending. A New World? Isn't all hope allowed?
The New World covers the Americas, and very early, Notre-Dame makes known her wishes. In 1531, she gives her instructions to an Indian, Juan Diego, mandating him to take up her demands to the bishop of the time. Message: build a place that will become witness of the blessings she wants to spread to these vast lands. Watermarked message: Our Lady of Guadeloupe will, from that moment, be the source of inspiration to several American peoples, including Spaniards, in search of a new world.
What is this new world? Neither utopia nor chimeras, but fulfillment of God's promise. It started in the land of Palestine; Mary, Joseph, Jesus, acting jointly, are thus renewing the whole of humanity, by laying the foundations of the nascent Church. It spread itself, spirit of Pentecost, all the way to the land of France, welcomed by Provence. There, still very much active, the presence of the three has shaped history. Since then, France no longer accounts for the places where the "presence" bursts into granted requests, healings and victories, where the most diverse characters cross paths: children and preachers, mystics, shepherdesses, princesses and kings, Therese and Vincent, Bernadette, Louis… all bearers of the "new" of the Gospel, in the old continent, pushing and pulling history towards its fullness.
The former contains the seeds of the new, it is never negligible. But God speaks through time and space:
"Leave your country…" He said to Abraham, because it is elsewhere that I will do something new.
Some of them, French, expatriated themselves, moved by this mystical thrust, to found, to sow, and to help grow a magnificent tree, with a nourishing foliage:

«Ce que vous voyez ici, n’est qu’un grain de sénevé; mais il est jeté par des mains si pieuses et si animées de l’esprit de la foi et de la religion, que, sans doute, il faut que le Ciel ait de grands desseins, puisqu’il se sert de tels instruments pour son œuvre; et je ne fais aucun doute que ce petit grain ne produise un grand arbre, ne fasse un jour des merveilles, ne soit multiplié et ne s’étende de toutes parts.»

"What you see here is only a mustard seed; but it is cast by such pious hands and so animated by the spirit of faith and religion, that, no doubt, Heaven must have great designs, since it uses such instruments for its work; and there is no doubt that this small seed will produce a large tree, will one day do wonders, will be multiplied and will spread everywhere. "

Véritable prophétie, proclamée par Barthélémy Vimont, supérieur de la mission des jésuites au Canada, qui accompagnait les fondateurs de Montréal en mai 1642, lors de leur arrivée sur l’île, elle fut citée, le 20 mai 1992, en pleine assemblée nationale du Québec. Dans une motion, M. Daniel Johnson (fils), alors président du Conseil du Trésor, demanda que l’assemblée souligne le 350e anniversaire de la fondation de la ville de Montréal.
Cette déclaration de Barthélémy Vimont n’a pas épuisé son sens et sa portée. Ceux qui ont envoyé les Montréalistes l’entrevoyaient eux-mêmes en écrivant dans les Véritables Motifs qu’il s’agissait de prendre part, de par la force et l’engagement du baptême, à l’envoi aux Nations.
M. Olier, l’un des fondateurs avec M. de la Dauversière, écrit :

True prophecy proclaimed by Barthelemy Vimont, superior of the Jesuit mission in Canada, and which accompanied the founders of Montreal in May 1642, when they arrived on the island; it was again quoted on May 20th, 1992, in the midst of the national assembly in Quebec. In a motion, Mr. Daniel Johnson (son), then President of the Treasury Board, asked that the assembly stresses the 350e anniversary of the foundation of the city of Montreal.
This statement of Barthélémy Vimont has not lost any of its meaning and scope. Those who sent the Montrealers foresaw it themselves by writing the True Motives that it was all about taking an active part, by virtue of the strength and engagement of one's own baptism, in the sending to the Nations.
Mr Olier, a founder like Mr de la Dauversière, writes:

«Tout de même en est-il dans ce temps, où DIEU, par une miséricorde infinie, veut faire de nouveaux biens à son Église et redonner l’esprit primitif. Il s’est tellement plu dans les mystères passés de JÉSUS, Marie et Joseph; ces mystères étaient conduits d’ailleurs par une sagesse si admirable, qu’ayant à renouveler la piété première, il prétend suivre la conduite qu’il a tenue sur son Église, quand il l’a instituée et fondée sur la terre, et se servir d’un semblable procédé. L’œuvre dont je parle doit consister en deux choses: l’une est le renouvellement de l’Église dans ces quartiers, l’autre l’établissement d’une nouvelle Église en Canada, où l’on va bâtir une ville chrétienne, qui est une œuvre d’une merveilleuse importance.»

"All the same, it is in this time when God, by His infinite mercy, wishes new good for his church and to restore its original spirit. He was so pleased in the past mysteries of Jesus, Mary and Joseph; also these mysteries were led by such an admirable wisdom, that having to renew its initial piety, he pretends to use the same conduct he held on his Church when he established it and founded it on earth, and to use a similar process. The work of which I speak must consist of two things: one is the renewal of the Church within its districts, the other is the establishment of a new church in Canada, where we will build a Christian city, which is a work of marvelous importance. "

Ce «semblable procédé», c’est la connaissance de Marie, Joseph et Jésus, auxquels on consacra l’île de Montréal en 1642 à la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. Non pas séparément, ou chacun de leur côté, mais dans leur fécondité trinitaire, source éternelle et constante de restauration de l’humanité.
Si les dons de Dieu sont sans repentance, c’est que le grain semé ici en terre d’Amérique n’a pas encore donné complètement son fruit. Il a besoin d’ouvriers pour y veiller. Certes, il a germé, et on peut le voir:
- À travers la vie de Jeanne Mance, qui, sans sac ni bâton, sans costume ni clôture, par le seul appel de son baptême, est venue porter l’amour de l’Évangile en Amérique et spécifiquement faire connaître Joseph;
- À travers la vie de Marguerite Bourgeoys, illustrant Marie «voyagère», et dont l’œuvre d’éducatrice dépasse depuis longtemps les frontières;
- Il faudrait aussi lire l’histoire des missions pour constater combien les missionnaires canadiens (la plupart venant du Québec) ont semé largement, parmi les nations, répandant partout l’amour de Jésus-Christ.
Oui, certes, le grain a germé, mais les rameaux de l’arbre ne sont pas encore déployés complètement. Ne faut-il pas explorer en profondeur ce «semblable procédé» pour que se lève un peu plus l’aube du Nouveau Monde?

This "similar process" is the knowledge of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, to which the island of Montreal was consecrated in 1642 at the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. Not separately, nor independently of each other, but in their Trinitarian fertility, eternal and constant source of restoration of humanity.
If the gifts of God are without repentance, it is that the seed sown here in the land of America has not completely given its fruit. It needs workers to ensure it happens. Certainly, it has blossomed, and it can be seen:
- Through the life of Jeanne Mance, who, without a rucksack or a walking stick, without costume or fence, responding simply to the call of her baptism, came to America to bring the love of the Gospel and, specifically, to make joseph known;
- Through the life of Marguerite Bourgeoys, depicting Mary "journeying", and whose work as an educator has reached far beyond its confines;
- One needs to read the history of the missions to discover how Canadian missionaries (who came mostly from Quebec) sowed widely, among the nations, spreading everywhere the love of Jesus Christ.
Yes, indeed, the grain germinated, but the branches of the tree are not yet fully deployed. Should we not explore in depth the "similar process" to let the dawn of the New World rise up?
